The design goal of this prototype Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center store was to develop a "cool" shop featuring trendy fashions and surf accessories appealing to juniors.

The design solution included a new thick wall storefront that is penetrated "Corbusian-style" to allow partial glimpses of the display - a more sensual effect than seeing the whole thing. A suspended gold wave ceiling flows from the exterior to the interior while gloss-red PVC columns create a rhythm along the interior of the storefront.

Simple, inexpensive treatment of the floor and ceiling - the two main elements - allowed use of more elegant materials where important in order to keep the project within budget.

The project won a Grand Award in the 1997 BIA Hawaii Renaissance competition.
